USC linebacker Cameron Smith was named the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, becoming the fourth Trojan in the last five seasons to win the award. Despite missing the last two games with a season-ending knee injury, Smith still leads the team in tackles (78).

After arriving in the spring, Smith earned a starting spot at inside linebacker and became an essential playmaker, including three interceptions in the win over Utah. He is the fifth Trojan to win the award, joining Adoree' Jackson (2014), Leonard Williams (2012), Dion Bailey (2011) and Taylor Mays (2006).
