Doris Chen, the 2014 NCAA champion, kicked off her senior season with a 2-under 70 and led the USC women's golf team to a tie for fifth place after the first round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at the Reunion Resort Watson Course in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday (Sept. 28).
The Trojans, playing without All-American juniors Annie Park and Kyung Kim, finished a combined 1-under 287, seven back of first-place Arizona (280) and five back of second-place South Carolina. Northwestern and Stanford are tied for third (286) while Troy is tied with Oklahoma State.
USC featured a lineup of three sophomores and a junior in addition to Chen. Two of the sophs, Karen Chung, a 2014 All-American as a freshman, and first-year transfer Elizabeth Doty, are tied for 20th at par 72 while Gabriella Then is tied for 28th at 1-over 73. Junior walk-on Victoria Morgan is tied for 49th at 5-over 77 in the 60-woman field.
In addition to missing Park and Kim, this is also USC's first event since the graduation of four-time All-American Sophia Popov as the Trojans returned to action with only two of the golfers (Chen and Chung) it had during its second-place 2014 NCAA finish.
Chen carded a trio of birdies, including two on her opening front 9 and one on 17 to finish at 2-under and within two strokes of first.
Chung was even on both nines today with a combined three birdies. Doty opened at 3-over through 10 but rallied with three birdies over her final eight holes.
Then was 1-over going out and even coming in with two birdies. Morgan was even through 10 holes today and was only 2-over before finishing with a bogey and a double.
Action continues Monday and Tuesday.
