Got the Message
After a sluggish start in the previous game nearly cost the Trojans, USC came out fast and furious to take a 45-25 halftime lead over Fullerton. "I thought we played a very good first half defensively," said Enfield whose team forced 10 first half turnovers. "I thought our intensity was great the whole first half." The Trojans coasted a bit in the second half, but the lead never fell below 10.
Owning the Paint
USC center Omar Oraby was too big for the Titans to handle on either end of the floor. Offensively, he scored 15 points on 4/5 shooting and made 7/10 free throws. Defensively, he blocked 6 shots, and picked up 9 rebounds. Enfield called the big man "virtually unstoppable," and also said, "Tonight, he demanded the ball, and we got him the ball."
Attack the Rim
Without many great outside shooters, Enfield wants the guards to "drive the ball and get it inside" and "play to our strength." The head coach started point guards Pe'Shon Howard and Julian Jacobs together for the second consecutive game. "I think it is an advantage just because either of us can run the point," said Jacobs who had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Plus, if either Jacobs or Howard gets a rebound, they are instructed to push the ball and get fast break alley-oops (see the highlights below).
And-1...
Terrell Sits Out
J.T. Terrell did not play tonight due to "academic reasons" again. "I love him," said Enfield. "We're here to support him, but he needs to do what is necessary to be a student-athlete."
