In 2012, Cook has pitched to a sparkling 0.59 ERA, which breaks down to two earned runs in 30.2 IP, and an utterly dominant 0.85 WHIP (anything less than a baserunner per inning is filthy). After starting the season in middle relief with low expectations, he has surged into the closer role, including picking up the save in a scoreless 9th inning against the Dodgers last night.
Some young pitchers struggle with the pressure of getting the final three outs, but Cook is thriving in his new role.
"You wouldn't think there'd be a difference, but it's that extra adrenaline boost," Cook said about closing games. "It's a different beast."
Originally, he was not on board with pitching relief, but the 27th round pick in the 2008 MLB Draft admits the change has been beneficial to his career. If he keeps up his current pace for another month, he will likely represent the A's at the All-Star Game in July.
