Junior Sam Smith fired a 5-under 67 while sophomore Jeffrey Kang and junior Martin Trainer were also under par to lead No. 5 USC during the third round of the 2012 Pac-12 Championships, Saturday (April 28), at the Trysting Tree G.C. in Corvallis, Ore.
The defending-champion Trojans are tied for fourth with Oregon State at even 1080 (368-356-356) after their second consecutive 4-under round. They trail first-place Oregon (1066) by 14 strokes while UCLA is second (1070) and California third (1072).
Smith's 67 was a season-low and moved him into a tie for sixth at 4-under 212 (77-68-67). He had five birdies on the day without a bogey. Kang is tied for 13th at 2-under 214 (73-70-71) and battled to a 1-under round with six birdies and five bogeys.
Freshman Anthony Paolucci remained in the top 20, tied for 18th at 1-over 217 (70-72-75) with three bogeys in the round. Senior Steve Lim is tied for 25th at 2-over 218 (74-72-72). He was 3-under through 11 before finishing the round at par.
Junior Martin Trainer improved to a tie for 28th at 3-over 219 (74-74-71), turning in a solid round with three birdies and one bogey. Sophomore Ramsey Sahyoun rounded out the group, tied for 60th at 13-over 229 (78-76-75).
Action concludes Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.
