No. 1 USC Men Silence Stanford Again

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 1 USC men's tennis team took on No. 11 Stanford at home today to improve their record to 24-0 with a decisive 7-0 victory over the Cardinal in front of a packed crowd at Marks Stadium. It was the second clean sweep of the Cardinal by the Trojans this year, and helps USC improve to a 24-0 overall and 5-0 in Pac-12 play to keep charging along on a 44-match overall winning streak.
USC opened doubles play with a quick 8-2 win by #20 Daniel Nguyen / Ray Sarmiento over Stanford's Matt Kandath / Denis Lin. The Trojans took the doubles point with another 8-2 victory by Emilio Gomez / Yannick Hanfmann and eventually swept doubles after a lengthy battle at the top spot led to #15 Steve Johnson/Roberto Quiroz taking the upset win over Stanford's #5 Klahn/Thacher 8-5.
Next, #43 Yannick Hanfmann quickly put the Trojans further ahead to kick off singles with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Stanford's Robert Stineman. #17 Daniel Nguyen followed with an additional victory before #56 Emilio Gomez clinched the match for the Trojans with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to put USC up 4-0 on the Cardinal.
Meanwhile, #2 Steve Johnson managed to grind out a victory over Stanford's Bradley Klahn, the last player to hand him a singles loss in NCAA play, finishing the match 6-3, 6-4. #20 Ray Sarmiento also managed to edge out Stanford's Ryan Thacher at the No. 2 spot, leaving Roberto Quiroz to wrap up the match. After falling behind 2-6 in the first set, Quiroz rallied back against tough-competitor Daniel Ho of Stanford to eventually take the match with a 1-0 (7) tie-breaker victory.
Now 5-0 in Pac-12 matchups, the Trojans next face No. 12 California at home tomorrow (April 15) at 10 a.m. before wrapping up the regular season on Friday, April 20 against cross-town rival UCLA, also at Marks Stadium.
