The No. 4 USC men's golf team battled through a tough outing on Friday (March 9) at Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas, but improved from a patchy start to a respectable finish, led by freshman Anthony Paolucci's 1-over 73.
The Trojans, who began their round on the 10th hole, couldn't do much right on the back half of the course, combining to go 16-over. But the team rallied over the final nine holes at a combined 2-under and, dropping their low round of the day, the squad finished at a combined 10-over 298, tied for 12th, within shouting distance of first-place Cal (2-under).
Paolucci's 73, good for a tie for 23rd, featured three birdies and an eagle to balance four bogeys and a double. He was 3-over going out and 2-under coming home, the eagle on his final hole helping matters a bit.
Senior Steve Lim, junior Martin Trainer and sophomore Jeffrey Kang all finished at 3-over 75, tied for 40th. Kang was 5-over after six holes before finishing the final 12 holes at 2-under. Trainer's round was done in by a triple on 12 and a double on 2. Lim saved his round with four birdies over his final nine holes, though his momentum stopped with a double on his final hole.
Sophomore Ramsey Sahyoun rounded out the efforts at 5-over 75, tied for 56th. He settled down after a rough start to finish even over his back 9.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. each day.
