Junior Sam Smith carded a 1-under 69 while sophomores Jeffrey Kang and Ramsey Sahyoun were each at par Saturday to lead the No. 5 USC men's golf team into second place during the second round of the 2012 U.S. Intercollegiate at the Stanford (Calif.) G.C. on Saturday (March 31).
USC moved to 4-over 564 (279-285) with the third-best second round, though did lose a stroke to first-place Oregon (556), which holds an eight-stroke lead. UCLA and host Stanford are tied for third at 8-over 568.
The Trojans are after their second win this season and their fifth top 2 finish in their past five stroke play events.
Smith moved into a tie for fifth at 1-under 139 (70-69) as he angles for his second top 10 finish of the season. Smith was even on the front 9 and 1-over through 16 holes but finished with back-to-back birdies for his third round in the 60s this season.
Kang, who has three top 10 finishes this year, is seventh at even 140 (70-70) while Sahyoun, seeking his first top 10 result, is tied for eighth at 1-over 141 (71-70). Each mixed four birdies and four bogeys in their respective rounds.
Junior Martin Trainer is tied for 25th at 5-over 145 (69-76) while freshman Anthony Paolucci is tied for 36th at 6-over 146 (70-76).
Final round action begins Sunday at 8 a.m.
