Going into the Pac-12 Tournament, USC women's basketball was riding a six-game winning streak and sat on the good side of the bubble according to ESPN.com Bracketology. The Women of Troy are in a precarious position now though having been upset by Washington St. last night 69-55 in the quarterfinals.
The Trojans have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2006. With an RPI of 30 and the 11th toughest schedule in the country (before last night), they still have some strong numbers to make a case behind.
If they do end up without an invitation to the Big Dance, they will bemoan a flat performance in Galen Center when the shots just would not drop. USC made just 26.2% from the field.
"Anytime you get in the tournament, everyone's playing to win," said senior Briana Gilbreath (photo via Pac-12). "They had a little bit more intensity, fire, energy and consistency. I wasn't surprised because Washington State is a team that can do that on any given night. They played well."
The Women of Troy defeated the Cougs by 11 in Pullman last weekend to close the regular season. Washington State is the No. 11 seed, but they have already pulled off two upsets thanks to hot three-point shooting (10/20 vs. USC).
USC will know its fate Monday night at 5 p.m. when the bracket is unveiled during the Selection Show on ESPNU.
