Sitting at 6-0 and going for the sweep of Akron, USC baseball got off to a sleepy start Sunday. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Trojans were in danger of losing the early season momentum.
Not this team. Not yet at least. Something special is happening for Frank Cruz's squad in 2012.
USC crawled back to 3-2 and loaded the bases for senior slugger Alex Sherrod who promptly launched the first pitch to the parking structure over the right field wall.
The Trojans are hot right now. How hot? At 7-0, the baseball program is off to its best start since 1988.
"We are obviously pleased with the 7-0 start," said head coach Frank Cruz. "I'm happy for our guys and for our program, but we are in no way satisfied. We have plenty of room for improvement and we have some tough tests coming up this week."
USC hits the road now and the strength of schedule increases. The Trojans will surf to Pepperdine for an afternoon affair on Tuesday before jetting to Chapel Hill for a weekend three-game set against No. 6 North Carolina.
