Senior Sam Smith and freshman Yi Keun Chang each carded 1-under 71s to lead the No. 4 USC men's golf team to a two-stroke lead after the first round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga., on Friday (Oct. 19).
The Trojans are 1-over 289 after 18 holes, two better than both Wake Forest and Georgia Tech (291) and four better than fourth-place Oklahoma State (293).
Chang and Smith are tied for seventh with their 71s. Chang opened on fire with five birdies over his first seven holes and was 4-under on the front 9 before cooling off a bit with the 3-over back 9. Smith, on the other hand, was 3-over after 4 holes but finished the final 14 holes at 4-under, sinking birdies on 17 and 18 for good measure.
Junior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 19th at 1-over 73. He birdied 2 and bogeyed 3 and 10 with pars the rest of the way.
Sophomore Anthony Paolucci is tied for 22nd at 2-over 74 while junior Ramsey Sahyoun is tied for 39th at 4-over 76.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday.
