LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The top-ranked USC men's tennis team snagged their third straight shutout win of the year with a 7-0 decision over #61 UNLV today in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Marks Stadium. The Trojans will move on to tomorrow's winner's circle to face UNC-Wilmington for the right to a ticket to the coming ITA National Team Indoor Championships. USC will face the Seahawks at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Jan. 29) after UNLV and South Florida face off at 10 a.m.
UNC-Wilmington edged out South Florida 4-2 in today's first match. When the Trojans took the court, they made a push through UNLV during doubles as Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz pinned up an 8-4 win on court three before Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento iced the first point for USC with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
Singles was an all-out Trojan domination with no more than two games surrendered in every set but one. Quiroz was the clincher on the day with a smooth 6-2, 6-0 workover of Johannes Markel on court four, following quick wins by Eric Johnson and Ray Sarmiento. Also getting in on the victorious straight-set effort by USC in singles were Yannick Hanfmann, Jordi Vives and Daniel Nguyen, who was the lone upperclassman in the lineup for USC today.
