THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. - The USC men's tennis team has almost complete domination of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, filling all but one of the eight semifinal slots across the singles and doubles draws tomorrow. It will be an all-Trojan singles day tomorrow, with three Trojan doubles duos lined up for doubles.
In the singles realm, USC has a pair of senior-sophomore clashes on the docket. Sophomore Ray Sarmiento will take on senior Daniel Nguyen on one half of the semifinal bracket. On the other, sophomore Emilio Gomez faces senior Steve Johnson to complete the guarantee of an eventual Trojan champion at the tourney. Sarmiento had to get past another Trojan teammate today in the quarterfinals, in fact, beating out freshman Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4 to move into the semis.
In doubles, USC came just one win short of a complete field of Trojans in tomorrow's semifinals. Freshmen Eric Johnson and Jordi Vives lost out to a Baylor pair in the quarterfinals to fall short of facing teammates Steve Johnson and Hanfmann tomorrow in the semis. On the other side of that bracket are USC powers -- and singles semifinal opponents -- Nguyen/Sarmiento and Gomez/Roberto Quiroz.
