The USC women's cross country team will take six freshmen and a redshirt junior to compete at the 67th annual Aztec Cross Country Invitational (5K) to be held at historic Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. on Sept. 17 at 8:30 a.m.
Expected to race for USC this weekend are redshirt junior Jessica Lundin and freshmen Erica Capellino, Erin Robinson, Shannon Byrne, Kira Soderstrom, Erin Matranga and Austin Lundin.
"This race is all about the sensational six and the veteran Jessica Lundin," said USC cross country head coach Tom Walsh. "Jessica has been slowed by minor aches and pains and that is why she is starting her season a week later. I look for the freshmen six to improve off last week's race. They were all nervous going into Irvine (UC Irvine Invitational). I'm hoping they will be relaxed this week and ready to race faster."
USC placed seventh at the UC Irvine Invitational and posted solid season-opening times, but this 5K course is expected to be more challenging with more and steeper hills.
"Basically I want too take another step forward and build off last week's performance," added Walsh. "This will be Capellino's first race as a Trojan. Her training has gone very well. She's an excellent hill runner and I look forward to a solid effort Saturday."
The USC cross country team will not compete next week and scheduled to take the course again on Oct. 1 at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif.
