Thanks to Title IX, women competing for national titles has become commonplace but it was not always the case. In 1975, USC had zero female student-athletes on full athletic scholarships.Barbara Hallquist received the first full ride in 1976.Â
The women's tennis star blazed the trail at Troy on and off the court. She won four team national championships and two NCAA singles titles all while graduating with honors.
After USC, Hallquist enjoyed a successful pro career, including a U.S. Open quarterfinal appearance, before landing in the ITA Women's Tennis Hall of Fame last fall.
Now Barbara Hallquist-DeGroot, she was honored at Marks Stadium earlier this season before watching the exemplary female student-athletes thrive on the current women's tennis team.
She also spent some time with SC TV to talk about the changes in women's athletics over the last 36 years and her love for this university.
