USC Takes Early Lead In Dual Meet After Hammer Throw

Jenny Ozorai won the women's hammer throw with the third-best throw in school history and Trey Henderson hung on to capture the men's competition as USC jumped out to 6-3 leads after one event in the annual USC-UCLA Dual Meet, following the hammer throw competition today (April 30) at Mt. SAC in Walnut, Calif.
The women's competition was first and the freshman Ozorai got out of the gates strong with a throw of 206-2 (62.84m) which actually would have won the event and earn USC 5 points. The native of Hungary also had throws of 207-9 and 208-1 before UCLA's freshman Ida Storm finished in second with a best mark of 206-0 (62.79m) to earn 3 points for the Bruins. Ozorai then used her final throw to vault from fourth to third on USC's all-time hammer throw list with a season-best mark of 212-3 (64.70m) in the final throw of the competition. USC redshirt junior Marissa Minderler took third place in the women's competition with a best throw on the day of 197-5 (60.18m) to earn the final point.
Redshirt junior Jade Niemeyer finished in fourth place and posted two throws which were PRs, first a throw of 177-6 and then her best mark of 179-0 (54.57m). Redshirt junior Tamara Baumann was fifth with a throw of 174-3 (53.13m), redshirt sophomore Ashley Pyka sixth with a throw of 170-3 (51.91m), redshirt freshman Stepahie Hoffer seventh with a best throw of 126-3 (38.49m) and redshirt sophomore Farren Benjamin eighth with a mark of 126-0 (38.41m).
USC senior Henderson and UCLA freshman Alec Faldermeyer turned out to post quite a battle. Henderson's first throw was 217-10 (66.40m) and Faldermeyer's first effort was a throw of 206-11 (63.06m), setting up a two-man battle the rest of the way. Henderson's third throw of 218-7 (66.62m) proved to be the winner...but just barely. Henderson fouled his next two attempts and in Faldermeyer's final throw he threw 218-5 (66.58m) to finish two inches short, but still setting a PR of roughly 10 feet. Henderson, who fouled in his last attempt, earned USC 5 points and Faldermeyer 3 points for the Bruins, while USC redshirt sophomore Eric Stein picked up the final point by placing third with a PR of 182-8 (55.69m) on his final throw.
UCLA's redshirt junior Tom Nagengast took fourth with a throw of 166-2 (50.65m). Redshirt freshman Beau Falgout had a strong day, posting his four best career marks and finishing fifth with a PR of 145-5 (44.33m) and redshirt freshman Benjamin Gelsey took sixth with a best mark on the day of 145-1 (44.23m).
The remaining 18 events of the USC-UCLA Dual Meet will be held tomorrow (May 1) at Loker Stadium on the USC campus beginning at 11 a.m.
