Saturday was moving day at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships at Stanford, (Calif.) G.C. and the No. 17 USC men's golf team was headed in the right direction as they maintained control of first place after the third round of play thanks in part to a pair of sub-par rounds by sophomore Martin Trainer and freshman Jeffrey Kang.
USC had its best day of the tournament and remained atop the leader board as Stanford made up ground and Oregon slipped in the standings. The Trojans are sitting at 11-over 1061 (355-354-352), three ahead of second-place Stanford (1064) and nine ahead of Oregon (1070). UCLA is tied for third (1070) with California fifth (1083), Oregon State sixth (1088), Washington seventh (1089), Washington State and Arizona tied for eighth (1090) and Arizona State 10th (1102).
"We couldn't ask for anything more at this point, " USC head coach Chris Zambri said. " Everyone needs to step up tomorrow in order for us to prevail. Coach Brewer and I cannot wait to watch our young men try to achieve something very special."
Trainer, who entered the day with a share of the lead, remained tied for first at 5-under (68-68-69) with Oregon State's Alex Moore after shooting a one-under 69 on Saturday. Trainer had four birdies on the day and could have had sole possession of the lead if not for three double-bogies in the final six holes.
Freshman Jeffrey Kang (72-68-68) climbed up the charts for a share of third place after posting a 2-under 68 in a round that included five birdies, three of which came in the final six holes as well.
Sophomore Sam Smith (73-71-71) saw improvement Saturday as he moved into a tie for 16th at five-over.
Junior Steve Lim, even for the day (72-74-70), saw a ten-slot improvement as he rose to a tie for 21st place at 6-over par.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel fell into a tie for 28th place (71-73-74) after shooting four-over in his round despite a strong 2-under finish in the final four holes.
Freshman Ramsey Sahyoun (72-75-75) dropped into a tie for 42nd place after going 5-over on the tough Stanford course.
USC is grouped with California and Oregon State in Sundays final round. The Trojans will tee off between 8:00 and 8:50 a.m.
