Junior Martin Trainer fired a 4-under 68 to lead USC, now tied for eighth, in the second round of The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Monday (Oct. 10).
Troy is a combined 1-under 575 (289-286) after 36 holes, 23 back of first-place Oregon (552). Washington is second (557) and San Diego State is third (558).
Trainer is tied for 14th at 4-under 140 (72-68) after an eight-birdie effort. Starting on the sixth hole in a shotgun start, he didn't do himself any favors with a triple bogey on the seventh hole. But he responded with a birdie on 9, the first of four in a row to get him to 1-under overall. He bogeyed 17 and finished with four more birdies over the final six holes.
Sophomore Ramsey Sahyoun is tied for 28th at 1-under 143 (73-70). In a very steady round, he birdied three times and didn't record a bogey until his final hole.
Junior Sam Smith is tied for 48th at 3-over 147 (70-77) while sophomore Jeffrey Kang (76-73) and senior Steve Lim (74-75) are tied for 59th.
Action concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m.
