The Trojans and new head coach Lane Kiffin conducted their first scrimmage of spring under cloudy skies that eventually dissipated into the requisite Southern California sun. A few notes through the eyes of RipsIt (also check out the post below for the entire transcription of the scrimmage live blog)...
- After players went though a shortened version of their typical warmups, the first half of the scrimmage displayed plenty of offensive firepower. Matt Barkley led off the opening drive by marching down the field and connecting with Ronald Johnson on a short post route for a TD. It was the first of 5 TDs in the 37-play first half.
- The scrimmage did not incorporate any special teams; no field goals were attempted and instead of punting to the opposing team, the conclusion of one team's possession was followed by the other team taking the ball at their own 30 yard line.
- Several hundred high school coaches were in attendance as well as Harvard head coach Tim Murphy, all of whom will later partake in the Nike Coaches Clinic.
- After a brief halftime break, the defense found its stride. Neither offensive team scored in the second half. Both quarterbacks--Matt Barkley and Mitch Mustain--directed 9 series each.
