We received a question about the purpose of having officials at practice each day. The Trojans hire eight referees per day to work the practices like a game, so the players and coaches can practice within the rules. Offsides, false starts, illegal formations and pass interference calls are routinely flagged by the refs during practice, and it helps the Trojans adequately get ready for the game.
The hired practice officials are from a variety of backgrounds, including from the Division I, junior college or high school ranks. Coming to the USC practice field also acts as training for the officials, who get extra work refereeing during the week.
