Like the first day of school in third grade, it's time to share what everyone did over their summer vacations.
For the USC coaching staff, there were numerous highlights -- everything from surfing to traveling to jury duty. See what many of the Trojan football staffers did during their July break from work:
- Defensive line coach Jethro Franklin: Traveled to Tokyo and was a guest coach for Waseda University's American football team for a week. "It was fun and the family loved it," Franklin said.
- Graduate assistant Justin Mesa: Spent 26 days in Japan, including a day of guest coaching alongside Franklin at Waseda University.
- Offensive line coach Pat Ruel: Went on a 131-mile bike ride from Manhattan Beach to San Diego, starting at 5:30 a.m. and ending in the late afternoon on July 25.
- Defensive coordinator Rocky Seto: Was the guest preacher on July 18-19 at Saddleback Church; also served jury duty on an attempted murder case that lasted five days.
- Offensive coordinator John Morton: Learned how to surf.
- Special teams coordinator Brian Schneider: Visited family and friends in Colorado, where he grew up.
- Senior associate athletic director for football Mark Jackson: Spent the Fourth of July in Boston and attended a matinee Red Sox game, a Boston Pops concert and watched fireworks along the Charles River.
- Running backs coach Todd McNair: Took his kids camping and canoeing in New Jersey.
- Quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach for the offense Jeremy Bates: Spent valuable time with his fiancé and three dogs.
- Coach Carroll: Learned how to do standup paddle surfing -- "my big accomplishment for the summer," he said.
