RipsIt reader Mary Smith-Jones e-mailed in with this question: "Just wondering what ever came of the controversy surrounding having home teams housed in hotels prior to home games? Was Pete Carroll successful in convincing the NCAA to allow the tradition to continue?"
In short, nothing will change when it comes to home teams staying in hotels during the upcoming season, as the Pac-10 cost-cutting idea from May's coaches meetings never advanced past the proposal stage. At the time, it was a suggestion that incensed Coach Carroll, who said this summer, "I couldn't be more opposed to this proposal.... This is not a place they should be going to save money."
"It was something we were proposing on a national scale," said Jim Muldoon, the Pac-10's associate commissioner of communications and football administration. "But I don't think anyone has taken it up yet."
So the proposal is effectively dead for the time being and Muldoon said definitely won't have any effect on home hotel arrangements in 2009. The Trojans will continue staying in a downtown hotel before their six games at the Coliseum this fall.
