Check out the players, including many freshmen, who had standout performances during Saturday's opening practice of the fall:
- Tailback Joe McKnight broke a 75-yard touchdown run during team drills thanks to awesome blocking by the offensive line. "That a baby!" quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates bellowed after McKnight got into the open. McKnight also had another long run later in the day when he deftly squeezed between linemen to cut loose into the open field.
- During team period, Matt Barkley floated a perfect pass to freshman wideout De'Von Flournoy deep down the left sideline. "That was sweet!" running backs coach Todd McNair yelled after the completion.
- Flournoy was also impressive in 1-on-1s with several big-time catches.
- Wideout Jordan Cameron logged an all-around special day, turning several short completions into long gains by exhibiting a great yards-after-the-catch knack. "He had a terrific first day," Coach Carroll said of Cameron.
- Receiver Damian Williams recorded several pretty toe-dragging catches along either sideline.
- During team period, freshman fullback Simi Vehikite had an athletic catch on a short pass in the flat before turning it upfield.
- Nose tackle Christian Tupou had terrific pressure and a pass deflection in team drills.
- Defensive end Everson Griffen posted a handful of sacks and pressures on the quarterback in full-team work.
