The Coaches Poll was released today, but the news hasn't made it to the USC football office yet.
In fact, it might not ever.
The college football rankings don't mean a thing to the Trojan coaches and players, who are about as oblivious as possible to whatever the latest poll news is.
And it's all a part of the plan. Coach Carroll emphasizes "controlling what you can control," and the rankings fall into the "out of control" category. So it's a waste of time and energy to even let the rankings enter into the players' and coaches' mindset.
"Why worry about something that has no bearing on how we go through meetings, practices and games?" Carroll said. "Thinking about that stuff goes against everything we stand for."
It's the same reason why the team's goal is to win the Pac-10 every year -- because the Trojans can win the conference by how they play on the field instead of relying on polls and votes, like the way the BCS works.
