RipsIt reader Matt Rodriguez e-mailed in with this interesting question: "Why is it that there are a few players with the same number? Aren't there enough numbers for everyone to have their own?"
With between 105 and 110 players on the roster at one time and only 99 single- or double-digit numbers available, some players simply have to double up. Then add in the seven retired numbers of USC's Heisman Trophy winners, and you're down to just 92 available numbers for more than 100 players.
Besides the Heisman numbers, only 10 numbers aren't in use, and nearly all of them are vacant offensive lineman numbers (between 60 and 79), digits that are more or less reserved for that position group.
Currently, 26 Trojans double up their jersey numbers.
