Thoughts from Friday's scrimmage, through the eyes of USCRipsIt...
- The story of the first week of camp became the story of Friday's intra-squad scrimmage, as Matt Barkley continued to shine in leading the offense on three scoring drives. The freshman quarterback, who looked smooth and comfortable taking all the first-team snaps, went 10-for-17 for 120 yards, a touchdown and an interception, along with running for a score as well. "He handled himself beautifully," Coach Carroll said of Barkley. "All in all, he's made a tremendous impression."
- Mostly using smart check-down passes, Mitch Mustain went 14-of-16 for 154 yards and a touchdown Friday. He led two scoring drives and was turnover-free. "He made very smart decisions and did a very nice job," Carroll said of Mustain.
- The defense made a statement as well during Friday's 72-play scrimmage, as it held the offense scoreless on six of its 11 drives. A well-read interception by safety Will Harris was the defense's one turnover on the day. "All across the board, everyone was hustling and playing hard," Carroll said in the post-practice huddle.
- Perhaps the position group that made the biggest impact Friday was the offensive line, which allowed only one sack in 66 offensive snaps and forged the path for 115 rushing yards.
- Safety Josh Pinkard had an interception during pre-scrimmage 7-on-7 drills.
- Loud music played over speakers that surrounded the field and hundreds of fans packed the sidelines, giving the scrimmage a lively, festive atmosphere.
