RipsIt reader Brian Edwards e-mailed in asking why certain injured players travel and are on the sidelines during road games, while others are not: "On Saturday night I saw David Ausberry on the sidelines though he was not dressed an obviously not playing. Then I know that Everson Griffen and Brandon Carswell are both injured and did not make the trip. Is there any particular reason for this?"
In almost all circumstances, it's not worth using up one of the valuable spots on the 64-man travel roster to take a player who is hurt and not able to play, so injured players are left off the squad for a road trip. But players can travel on their own to the game and then be with the team on the sidelines and in the locker room. Ausberry and safety Drew McAllister were among the handful of players who made the trip to Arizona State on their own last weekend, and about 10 players did so for the California game last month.
Because they're a part of the team, the players who do that do not have to purchase a ticket to the game.
