RipsIt reader Kyle Miyamoto e-mailed in with this interesting question about squad sizes for home games in light of last week's post about home roster numbers: "In the movie Rudy, the coach tells Rudy that they were extremely limited in their dress squad size (even for home games). Has that rule changed or is that just another Hollywood drama piece?"
According to the rulebook, home teams are not limited on how many players they can dress out for home games. The entire roster -- in USC's case, that's 108 players -- can suit up and be available for home contests, which the Trojans do for all non-injured players. Allowing all players to dress out is a way Coach Carroll shows appreciation for the walk-ons and lower-rung players who most likely won't see any game action.
Some schools, though, limit the dress squad for home games for various reasons. Redshirting players at some programs do not suit up, while certain walk-ons at other programs don't dress out. Many schools in the south have enormous rosters -- Georgia, for example, has 131 players on its squad -- so the dress list is often pared down for game days since that many suited-up players is completely unnecessary.
