USC Finishes 10th in 2005-06 Directors' Cup

USC placed 10th in the 2005-06 NCAA Division I U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup competition, presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
USC scored 840 points in the all-sports competition among 300-plus NCAA Division I schools.. Points are awarded based on national finishes in a maximum of 10 men's and 10 women's sports.
It was USC's third Top 10 finish since 2000-01 and its ninth since the Directors' Cup's inception in 1994. Troy has placed at least in the Top 20 in each of the program's 13 years. Last season, the Trojans also placed 10th.
Before the national collegiate all-sports championship combined the results of both men's and women's programs in 1994, USC won the men's title 6 times (1971-72-74-75-77-80) since its inception in 1971 when it was presented first by the Knoxville Journal and then USA Today.
A number of USC teams finished in the national Top 10 in 2005-06, led by the NCAA champion men's water polo team. Football, women's water polo, women's track and field and women's golf were second, women's tennis tied for third, women's swimming and diving was sixth, men's swimming and diving was seventh and men's track and field was ninth.
Trojan athletes also won eight NCAA individual titles in 2005-06. Diver Blythe Hartley, hurdler Virginia Powell and high jumper Jesse Williams each won a pair of NCAA crowns, while golfer Dewi-Claire Schreefel and swimmer Rebecca Soni each captured an NCAA title.
Stanford won its 12th consecutive Director's Cup, with 1,197.375 points in 2005-06. UCLA was second with 1,071.375 points, followed by Texas (966), North Carolina (952.75), Florida (913), Notre Dame (905.5), California (865.5), Duke (851.25) and Georgia (850.75).
