Senior Ashley Jensen finished 57th to lead the Trojans today (Oct. 28) at the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.
The young Trojan squad of a senior, a sophomore and five freshmen finished in 10th place with 323 points. Stanford won the meet for the 11th consecutive season with a score of 22.
"Ashley slowly was coming into her own by the end of the season after missing a month of the season with a virus," said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. "She competed really well today and along with Bridget Helgerson out-kicked some runners down the stretch."
Jensen ran the 6K race set up on the Stanford Golf Course in a time of 22:44.87. Following her for the Trojans were sophomore Christine Greer (65th, 23:32.48) and freshmen Daniela Gergley (66th, 23:39.25), Bridget Helgerson (67th, 23:50.23), Katherine Ellis (68th, 24:01.63), Chanel Fischetti (69th, 24:56.70) and Natalie Jarvey (70th, 25:04.90).
With a strong recruiting class coming in next year added onto this young team, things are looking up in the cross country program.
"Everyone really competed well and it bodes well for the future," added Walsh. "Running in this big race is a good experience for everyone and they will benefit from this in the future. We made progress this season and are not far away. We just have to kick it up a notch next season and I think we will."
