USC finished 10th in the 2004-05 Sports Academy Directors' Cup NCAA Division I standings. The annual competition is sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA TODAY to determine the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
This was USC's highest finish since the 2000-01 season, when it placed eighth. The Trojans totalled 902.25 points this year, their most points ever.
This past season, the Trojans received significant points in the Directors' Cup when it won the football national championship, made it to the NCAA Final Four in women's volleyball and finished third in the NCAA women's water polo tourney. USC also received points for high national finishes in men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, baseball, men's and women's golf, and women's rowing.
This also was USC's eighth Top 10 finish in the 12 years of the combined men's/women's all-sports rankings. Troy's best finish was sixth in 1994-95.
(The combined men's/women's competition previously was known as the Sears Directors' Cup, beginning in 1993-94 through 2001-02. Before that, USA Today selected a men's-only ranking and a separate women's-only ranking from 1988-89 to 1992-93. Prior to that, the Knoxville Journal selected a men's-only and a women's-only ranking from 1984-85 to 1987-88 and a men's-only ranking from 1970-71 to 1983-84. USC won the Knoxville Journal's men's-only ranking six times between 1970-71 and 1980-81.)
Stanford won its 11th consecutive Directors' Cup this year, with 1238.75 points. The other schools in the Top 10 were Texas (1074), UCLA (1067), Michigan (1064.25), Duke (1021.25), Florida (979.25), Georgia (970), Tennessee (960.25) and North Carolina (940.5).
