Several adjustments to the USC football assistant coaching staff were announced today by head coach Pete Carroll:
- Carl Smith becomes the quarterbacks coach;
- Brennan Carroll becomes a full-time assistant in charge of the tight ends;
- Lane Kiffin takes on the added responsibility of passing game coordinator in addition to continuing to serve as the wide receivers coach.
The moves were prompted when quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian took a similar job with the Oakland Raiders this week.
Smith joined the staff last month as the tight ends coach. He has 32 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience, including 17 years working with quarterbacks. The past 3 seasons (2001-03), he was the quarterbacks coach with the Cleveland Browns.
Brennan Carroll, the oldest son of Pete Carroll, spent the past 2 seasons as a graduate assistant at Troy, including handling the tight ends in 2003.
Kiffin, a member of the USC staff since 2001, has spent the past 2 years (2002-03) working with the wide receivers.
