LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked USC men's tennis team completed a sweep of the desert schools by defeating No. 25 Arizona, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium, a day after sweeping Arizona State. With the win, the Trojans improve to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats drop to 8-6, 0-2 in conference-counting matches.
"I am very pleased with the way we've started our Pac-10 season," said USC head coach Peter Smith. "It's a nice start and hopefully we can continue this level of play against the remaining teams."
The Trojans got past all three doubles matches with ease, winning 8-5 at center court and 8-3 and 8-4 at courts two and three.
At the start of singles, USC held Arizona nearly scoreless on four of six courts in the first set. The Trojans eventually posted two-set victories on each of those four courts to ensure the USC win. Johan Berg defeated Tom Lloyd, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. Jamil Al-Agba captured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Whi Kim at court three. Ruben Torres beat Colin O'Grady, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot and Drew Hoskins posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Daniel Andrus at No. 5.
Arizona's only victory came at center court as Roger Matalonga upset the Trojans' 25th-ranked Adriano Biasella, 6-2, 6-0. USC's Daniel Langre completed the match with a comeback effort to defeat the Wildcats' Paul Warkentin, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at court six.
The Trojans resume play on Friday, March 19, when they travel to Pepperdine for a 1:30 p.m. match in Malibu.
