San Juan, Puerto Rico - Freshman Veronica Felibert shot a final-round 69 on Tuesday to win her first collegiate individual title by two strokes at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic held on Dorado Del Mar Golf Course.
Felibert, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, is the first USC freshman to win an individual title since Candie Kung won Pac-10 medalist honors in 2000. She is the second Women of Troy golfer to win a tournament this year (joining sophomore Irene Cho).
Her 54-hole total of 213 (71-73-69, -3) is a USC season-low and helped the Women of Troy to a fourth-place team finish. USC shot 893 overall, 31 strokes behind team champ Duke (862).
Georgia was second (885), followed by Oklahoma (888), with Tulsa fifth (896).
Felibert beat out runner up Elizabeth Janangelo of Duke (215), while Virada Nirapathpongporn (also of Duke) and Whitney Wade of Georgia tied for third at 216.
Putting in another strong tourney for USC was sophomore Ireno Cho, who shot 223 to tie for 16th. Senior Rachel Bell shot 227 to tied for 28th, while senior Anna Rawson shot 230 to tie for 38th and freshman Catalina Marin shot 239 to finish 54th.
The Women of Troy are next in action at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Tex., on March 21-23.
