Trojans Beat Toreros, 6-1

SAN DIEGO - Coming off a two-week break, the 19th-ranked USC men's tennis got right back into the swing of things by defeating No. 28 San Diego, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at USD's West Courts. With the win, the Trojans improve to 3-1 overall, while the Toreros garner their first loss of the season (3-1).
USC swept all six singles matches to earn the win after dropping the doubles point to start the afternoon.
"I am very happy with the win because we were able to play very strong singles away from home," said head coach Peter Smith. "Clearly we have some work to do in doubles, but we will work on it everyday and hopefully improve as the season continues."
San Diego won at No. 1 and 3 doubles for the first point, but did not complete the sweep. The Trojans captured a doubles victory at court two as Daniel Langre and Drew Hoskins teamed to defeat Nic Beuque and Oscar Plotnik, 8-2.
Freshman Jamil Al-Agba, playing his first match at the No. 1 singles position, upset the Toreros' 11th-ranked Pierrick Ysern, 6-2, 6-3. At court two, unranked senior Adriano Biasella followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over 76th-ranked Jason Pongsrikul and senior Ruben Torres added a win at No. 5 for a 3-0 USC lead. Junior Johan Berg eventually clinched the victory with a come-from-behind effort over San Diego's Beuque, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 position.
USC resumes action next week when it travels to Arizona and Arizona State on Feb. 20 and 21.
