LOS ANGELES, Ca. - USC tailback Justin Fargas ran for 111 yards on 12 carries and quarterback Carson Palmer completed 8-of-13 passes for 104 yards as the Trojans completed spring practice with a 79-play intrasquad scrimmage on Howard Jones Field on Saturday (April 20).
Fargas, who rushed for 139 yards and a score in USC's previous scrimmage last Sunday (April 14), scored once Saturday on a 2-yard run, while Palmer threw a 3-yard TD pass to wide receiver D. Hale. The scrimmage's other score came on a 27-yard field goal by placekicker David Davis.
Darryl Poston ran for 49 yards on 11 tries, while fellow tailback Sultan McCullough added 48 yards on 10 attempts. Matt Leinart was 4-of-9 passing for 44 yards and Matt Cassel was 3-of-9 for 36 yards.
Each of the 3 quarterbacks threw an interception, with linebackers Melvin Simmons and Collin Ashton and cornerback Alex Gomez getting the picks. Palmer and Fargas each lost a fumble, with Fargas' coming at the end of a 36-yard run when he was stripped by cornerback Marcell Allmond. Safety DeShaun Hill recovered Fargas' fumble and Simmons got Palmer's.
All-American safety Troy Polamalu had a game-high 5 tackles, while Allmond, Hill and linebackers Aaron Graham and Lee Webb each notched 4 stops.
New punter Tom Malone averaged 45.0 yards on his 4 boots.
"We had a very competitive spring and today was a very competitive scrimmage," said second-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. "We got a lot done. I'm very pleased where we are right now."
USC opens its 2002 season with a Sept. 2 home game against Auburn.
