The Evergreen Avenue Elementary school fourth and fifth graders received a treat on Tuesday as USC athletic director Mike Garrett, junior offensive lineman Eric Torres, freshman linebacker Oscar Lua and Trojan football operations assistant Seamus Callanan dropped by to talk to the children at the school auditorium.
Garrett, a graduate of East Los Angeles' Roosevelt High, recalled his days growing up in the Boyle Heights area where Evergreen is located. He encouraged the kids to study hard, to learn to read and write and count, and to cooperate with their teachers.

Garrett then introduced Torres and Lua, who both talked to the students about the importance of education. Torres encouraged the kids, who were largely Hispanic, to learn to speak proper English. Lua stressed that the Hispanic community needed to stick together and that though sports is a good outlet, it is not as important as working hard in school.
The Trojans also gave away 25 game tickets for honors students at Evergreen.
