Sarah Ellis raced to 18th place to lead the USC women's cross country team to seventh at the 2001 Pac-10 Cross Country Championship held in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Saturday (Oct. 27).
Ellis, a senior, ran the 6,000-meter course in 21:50.9. Freshman Lisa Rotsel took 33rd in a time of 22:47.3, while senior Sinfo Orosco was 34th (22:52.3).
USC scored a team total of 168. Stanford took the team title with a score of 27, followed by Arizona (64), Arizona State (79), UCLA (107) and Washington (109).
Stanford also took the top two individual spots, as Lauren Fleshman finished first in 20:08.1 and Sara Bei took second (20:17.4).
"I was pleased that four of our top five runners ran well in the heat," said USC coach Tom Walsh. "Sarah Ellis had a good finish and that's something that we had wanted from her. Sinfo Orosco and Heather Hennessy both ran gutsy races and did better than expected."
USC plans on sending Ellis to compete as an individual at the NCAA West Regionals in Tucson, Ariz., on Nov. 10.
