LOS ANGELES - Southern California Trojans tailback Sultan McCullough, who left last weekend's game against Arizona State early with an abdominal strain, did not make the trip to South Bend for Saturday's game against Notre Dame.
Sunny Byrd, a redshirt junior who replaced McCullough in the 48-17 victory over the Sun Devils, will start at tailback.
Linebacker Chris Prosser, recovering from a concussion, also will miss the game against Notre Dame.
Byrd, a reserve fullback and special teams player, rushed for 63 yards on 20 carries and scored on two short runs against ASU, the first touchdown coming on his first carry ever for the Trojans.
McCullough carried just four times before leaving the game. The previous week, he rushed for 132 yards in a 27-24 loss at Washington, the Trojans' fourth consecutive defeat. McCullough's performance in that game ended his string of unproductive outings - just 103 yards in three games.
In a season opening 21-10 victory over San Jose State, McCullough rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
Byrd, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior college transfer, will continue to play on special teams despite his start at tailback.
