LOS ANGELES - The USC football team will meet powerful Kansas State for the first time ever in a home-and-home series beginning in 2001, Trojan athletic director Mike Garrett announced today.
The Trojans will host the Wildcats in the Coliseum on Sept. 8, 2001, then will travel to Manhattan, Kan., in either 2002 or 2003. The exact date for the rematch will be finalized next spring.
"We are always looking to play outstanding, challenging opponents,? said Garrett. "Kansas State fits that description. This two-game series will bring together two of America's premier football programs. Our fans will be excited about this game and I know Kansas State's fans will be, too."
USC has won 8 national championships and 25 bowl games in its history. Kansas State emerged as one of the top programs in the 1990s, posting at least 9 wins and a bowl appearance in each of the past 7 seasons.
During the next 10 years, USC already has scheduled such football powers as Ohio State, Nebraska, BYU and Auburn in addition to its traditional annual contests with Notre Dame.
