7th Annual Janet Evans Invitational To Start Thursday

LOS ANGELES - Olympic gold medalists Jenny Thompson, Amanda Beard, Kristine Quance-Julian, Claudia Poll, Amy Van Dyken, Dara Torres and Brad Bridgewater, world record holders Lenny Krayzelburg, Tom Malchow and Penny Heyns and a host of U.S. national champions and NCAA All-Americans are among the headliners at the seventh annual Janet Evans Invitational at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium from Thursday through Sunday (July 13-16).
The Janet Evans Invitational, presented by Speedo, is one of the largest U.S. meets in the nation and is part of the Cadillac Challenge Swim Series. More than 800 swimmers will be in competition, featuring club teams throughout Southern California and much of the Western United States. International swimmers from Canada, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Peru will also be competing. The invitational is the last major meet before the U.S. Olympic Trials on Aug. 9-16 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Among the local stars to compete this weekend will be Beard (Hillenbrand/Irvine), Quance-Julian (Trojan Swim Club/Northridge), Krayzelburg (Trojan Swim Club/Studio City), two-time U.S. national champion and five-time NCAA title winner Lindsay Benko (Trojan Swim Club/Los Angeles), two-time 1998 Goodwill Games medalist Erik Vendt (USC), 1997 World University Games medalist Jason Lezak (Novaquatics/Irvine), 1997 U.S.S. Swimmer of the Year Chad Carvin (Mission Viejo Nadadores/Laguna Hills), seven-time U.S. national champion Jennifer Parmenter (USC/Granada Hills), 17-year old Kaitlin Sandeno (Nellie Gail Gators/Lake Forest), who won golds in the 400m and 800m free at the 1999 Pan Am Games, and 16-year old Aaron Peirsol (Novaquatics/Irvine), the youngest American to ever break two minutes in the 200m back. He is currently the second-fastest American and third-fastest man ever in the 200m back.
The Invitational is named after one of the world's greatest female Olympic swimmers, Janet Evans, who was a four-time Olympic gold medalist and former USC assistant coach.
The meet kicks off on Thursday (July 13) at 5 p.m. with timed finals of the 800m freestyle. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. and finals start at 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium each day of the event: $3 for prelims, $4 for finals and $5 for an all-day pass. Children age 6 and under will be admitted free. For more information, call (213) 740-8444.
