Westwood - The USC men's and women's track teams fell to their UCLA counterparts in the annual dual meet held at Drake Stadium in Westwood on Saturday (May 6).
Before a crowd of 5,463, the UCLA men's team defeated USC, 88-75, while the UCLA women defeated USC, 86-68. It was the 22nd consecutive win in the series for the Bruin men and the eighth in a row for the Bruin women. USC still leads the men's series, 38-29, but UCLA leads the women's series, 14-3.
The USC men seemingly had the meet in hand going into the 200 meter dash (which they were favored to win), but suffered a blow when Sultan McCullough pulled up in the race and was unable to finish. As a result, the Bruins took the first two spots in the 200 and came into the 5,000 meter run needing only seven points to clinch the meet. UCLA swept the race and collected nine points, making the 1,600 meter relay a non-factor in the tally. The bright spots for the day for USC included Djeke Mambo, who won both the long (25-0) and triple jumps (50-9 1/4), Norbert Horvath, who won the hammer throw (227-8, part of a Trojan sweep in that event) and basketballer-turned-trackster Jeff Trepagnier, who won the high jump (6-9) at the dual for the second straight year.
The USC women battled hard, but couldn't overcome the Bruins' strength in the field events. The Women of Troy were led by defending NCAA 100 meter champ Angela Williams, who won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.32) meter dashes, the versatile Natasha Danvers, who won the 400 meter hurdles (57.32), while finishing second in the high jump (5-10 1/2) and 100 meter hurdles (13.20) and Jennifer Vail, who equaled her school record (202-7) while placing second in the hammer.
The Trojans now get ready for the Pac-10 Championships in Eugene, Ore., on May 20-21. The USC men are the defending champions, while the Women of Troy finished second last year.
