Women's Tennis To Face Loyola Marymount

This Week -- After facing its first two conference opponents of the 2000 season, the 10th-ranked USC women's tennis team (3-1, 1-1) will return home for a nonconference match against Loyola Marymount this week. On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Trojans will challenge the Lions at 1:30 p.m. at the courts adjacent to Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus.
USC vs. Loyola Marymount -- Tuesday's match will mark the ninth meeting between these two squads in the 13-year old series. Last season, USC swept LMU, 9-0, at home on January 23, 1999.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC opened Pac-10 play in Arizona last weekend. On Friday (Jan. 28), the Trojans endured their first defeat of the season against Arizona State, 6-3, in a four hour tennis match in Tempe. Each team won three matches in singles, while four of the matches extended into the third set. Heading into doubles with the dual tied at three apiece, the Women of Troy surrendered all three doubles matches to the Sun Devils for the loss. On Saturday (Jan. 29), the Trojans came back to sweep Arizona, 9-0, in Tucson. Fourth-ranked Jewel Peterson outlasted Arizona freshman Uzma Khan, 7-5, 6-2, as she paced the Women of Troy to a six-point sweep in singles matches. The win broke a two-match slump for Peterson. Highlighting doubles play for the Trojans, the 39th-ranked duo of Tiffany Brymer and Kara Warkentin upset the eighth-ranked Wildcat duo of Michelle Gough and Lindsay Blau, 8-4.
USC News & Notes -- With the loss to No. 12 ASU, the Women of Troy are 0-1 against ranked opponents... Three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings are freshman, #4 Peterson, #70 Loyola, #39 Brymer (Doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking after finishing the 1999 season also ranked 10th.
1999 Fall Highlights -- Jewel Peterson claimed her first collegiate title at the Arizona State Tournament (Oct. 8-9) by defeating Amy Jensen of Cal... The team earned a decisive victory at Notre Dame (Oct. 15), claiming four singles points... Peterson earned an automatic berth to the ITA Indoor Championships by claiming the Rolex Regional Championship (Nov. 15) with a finals win over Cintia Tortorella of Pepperdine... Fellow newcomer Anita Loyola won the tournaments' back draw competition with a victory over Elizabeth Schmidt of UCLA.
Roster Additions -- Christina Irinco, currently in her third year as an undergraduate at USC, walked-on to the team at the start of the spring season. Irinco hails from North Hollywood where she played varsity tennis at John Burroughs High.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 125-70 (.641) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
