USC Named College of the Year
USC has been chosen as the "College of the Year" by the 2000 edition of
the Time/Princeton Review College guide. USC was chosen because of the
remarkable bonds the university has forged with local schools, community
residents, police, businesses and community organizations. The editors
cited the university's model of service learning--the practice of applying
academic theory to real life situations through public service--as their
main reason for choosing USC as the college of the year, saying USC has one
of the most ambitous social-outreach programs of any university in the
nation. This year, after seeing its undergraduate applications double over
the last few years, the university is enrolling the most academically
accomplished freshman class in its history. And USC is the only university
to have received three individual gifts of $100 million or more.
