LOS ANGELES-Junior quarterback Mike Van Raaphorst threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to walk-on wide receiver Matt Nickels and tailback Petros Papadakis ran for a 1-yard TD to highlight a 28-play intrasquad scrimmage by the USC football team on Friday (April 23) at Howard Jones Field on campus as the Trojans concluded spring drills.
Van Raaphorst, who started USC's first 8 games of 1998 before giving way to Carson Palmer, was 6-of-7 passing for 65 yards. Palmer was 1-of-4 for 6 yards, but had 2 passes dropped.
Papadakis gained 23 yards on 4 carries, while sophomore tailback Frank Strong ran 6 times for 36 yards.
Junior linebacker Sultan Abdul-Malik, junior safeties Darnell Lacy and John Morgan, and sophomore defensive end Lonnie Ford each had 3 tackles.
"It was a good wrap-up of spring practice," said second-year USC coach Paul Hackett. "It was a great way to cap it all off. We were able to get in some good work on a lot of things today and we showed the great enthusiasm that's been there all spring."
USC is off until it opens the 1999 season on Sept. 4 at Hawaii.
