IRVINE, Calif. - The USC defense, led by sophomore defensive end Sultan Abdul-Malik, controlled much of a 70-play intersquad scrimmage for the Trojan football team as it concluded its first week of practice at UC Irvine on Saturday.
The offense kicked three field goals and had a 3-yard touchdown run by freshman tailback Sultan McCullogh on the final play of scrimmage. Senior kicker Adam Abrams connected on 23- and 18-yard field goals, while sophomore David Bell was good on a 21-yarder.
Abdul-Malik had five tackles (four for losses of 18 yards and two sacks for 10 yards) to lead the defense. The defense had a total of 11 tackles for losses, including five sacks. Senior safety Grant Pearsall had an interception and redshirt freshman Ryan Nielsen recovered a fumble.
Offensively, the Trojans rotated their four quarterbacks, with sophomore Mike VanRaaphorst hitting 3-0f-5 passes for 20 yards and freshman Carson Palmer connecting on 1-of-2 passes, a 33-yarder to junior wide receiver R. Jay Soward.
Freshman tailback Frank Strong was the leading rusher, with 36 yards on 6 carries, while McCullogh added 22 yards on 7 tries.
