June 21, 1999 | Football
LOS ANGELES -- The USC football team has added a 12th regular-season game to its 1998 schedule and now new head coach Paul Hackett will make his debut as the Trojans host Purdue in the ninth annual Pigskin Classic at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, in the Coliseum.
The game, sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, will be televised nationally by ABC-TV.
"What a great way to start the 1998 season and to begin the Paul Hackett era at USC!" said USC athletic director Mike Garrett. "This Pigskin Classic gives our players and our fans an extra home game early in the season against a challenging Big Ten opponent."
Said Hackett: "It's an honor to begin my USC head coaching tenure in the Pigskin Classic. Our players are excited about playing in this game, first because they get to face such an outstanding team as Purdue and also because the game will be played in front of a national audience. And Trojan fans have to like that there's another home game on the schedule."
USC now has seven home contests on its 12-game 1998 schedule. Five of Troy's first six games are in the Coliseum.
This will be just the fourth meeting between the Trojans and Boilermakers. USC holds a 2-1 edge in the series, with wins in 1975 at home (19-6) and 1976 in West Lafayette (31-13) following a 14-13 loss in the 1967 Rose Bowl.
