USC Track Falls to UCLA

LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman sprinter Shakedia Jones blasted to victories in the 100 and 200 meters to pace the Bruin women to dual meet victories over USC and Brigham Young Saturday at Drake Stadium. The Bruin men led by distance star Mebrahtom Keflezighi held on to edge the Trojans and Cougars.
Jones, from Waukegan, Illinois, had huge personal bests in winning the 100 in 11.11 seconds (meet record) and came back to capture the 200 in 22.84, the fastest collegiate time in the United States this year. UCLA junior Joanna Hayes was also a double winner for the Bruins, taking the 100 meter hurdles in a personal record of 12.93 (meet record) and then was victorious in the 400 hurdles in 57.09, as UCLA topped USC 104-50 and outscored BYU 91-66. USC outscored BYU 78-75. UCLA defeated USC for the sixth consecutive year as they improved their all-time record against the Trojans to 12-3.
Keflezighi, the defending NCAA champion in both the 5000 and 10,000 meters, took the 5000 in 14 minutes 24.53 seconds after finishing second in the 1500 meters in 3:42.97. Bruin senior Scott Slover set a meet record in the pole vault (18-1) and UCLA sophomore Jess Strutzel won the 800 in a lifetime best 1:47.29 for UCLA, which edged USC 84-74 and BYU 89-70 in the dual meet competitions. USC squeezed by BYU 81-80.
The Bruins improved their seasonal record to 11-0 in 1998 and 55 consecutive wins overall. UCLA handed USC a defeat for the 20th consecutive year in their annual dual meet competitions.
Jerome Davis of USC had an outstanding day for the Trojans winning the 200 meters in 20.51, the 400 meters in a lifetime best 45.19, and ran the anchor leg for the victorious USC 400 meter team which clocked 39.78.
Outstanding marks by UCLA in the women's competitions included Suzy Powell in the discus with a throw of 199 feet 1 inch and a meet record victory for Andrea Anderson in the 400 meters in the time of 51.48 seconds. The Bruins' 4 X 100m relay set a meet record in a time of 43.49, which included strong legs by Jones (second) and Hayes (anchor). Bruin junior Andrea Anderson set a meet record in the 400m (51.48)
Two-time shot put world champion John Godina had an outstanding throwing double. The UCLA alum and 1996 Olympic silver medalist won his specialty with a put of 70 feet 10 inches and took the discus in 220 feet 5 inches, the second longest throw in the world this year.
