Track and Field Sweeps Hammer at Brutus Hamilton Memorial

BERKELEY, Calif. - USC's Bengt Johannson and Carrie Martin won the men's and women's hammer competition in the first day of the Brutus Hamilton Memorial Invitational at Berkeley's Edwards Stadium. The two events were the only events contested Friday, with the balance of the meet taking place Saturday, April 11. Field events begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday and running events get underway at 11:00 a.m.
Johannson won the men's hammer with a throw of 227-9, just ahead of Stanford's Adam Connolly, who threw 225-1. Cal senior and two-time All-American Travis Nutter finished third, throwing a career-best 217-1.
USC's Carrie Martin won the women's hammer for the second straight year, throwing 177-1, to defeat teammate Jennifer Vail (169-0). Cal junior Nadia Lopez finished fourth at 166-6, and Cal freshman Dana Lawson was ninth (143-2). Last year, Martin won the women's hammer with a throw of 181-9.
