LOS ANGELES--Steve Greatwood, who has 18 years of experience coaching the offensive line, has been named a USC assistant football coach in charge of the offensive line, new Trojan head coach Paul Hackett announced today. Greatwood's hiring leaves Hackett with just one more offensive assistant to hire. He previously announced the hiring of offensive assistants Hue Jackson, who will be the offensive coordinator, Larry Petroff and Mike Wilson, and said their specific position coaching assignments will be announced when the remaining spot is filled. Hackett's defensive staff is complete, as Bill Young will serve as defensive coordinator, Ed Orgeron will be the defensive line coach, Shawn Slocum will handle the linebackers and serve as the special teams coordinator, and Dennis Thurman will coach the secondary. Greatwood, 39, comes to USC after being the offensive line coach at Maryland in 1997. Before that, he handled the offensive line and tight ends for the St. Louis Rams for 2 seasons (1995-96). He spent the prior 15 years (1980-94) coaching at Oregon, his alma mater. After serving as a graduate assistant coach the first 2 seasons there, he worked with the offensive line and tight ends the rest of the time. The Ducks played in 4 bowls during his tenure, including the 1995 Rose Bowl. Among the players he coached who went into the NFL was All-Pro tackle Gary Zimmerman.
"Steve has an outstanding background coaching the offensive line and he has a tremendous history coaching on the West Coast and in the Pac-10," said Hackett. "He is a great motivator and is the right person to re-establish the offensive line tradition at USC.." Greatwood started at offensive guard for 3 years (1977-79) at Oregon and played in the Hula Bowl after his senior season. He prepped at Churchill High in Eugene, Ore.
He was born on Aug. 15, 1958. He and his wife, Sheri, have 3 daughters: Kallie, 14, and 10-year-old twins Tessa and Emmy. #
